29th INTERNATIONAL PAK ORTHOCON

The following presentations were prepared by Prof. EEG Lautenbach for the 29th INTERNATIONAL PAK ORTHOCON, the annual scientific conference of the Pakistan Orthopaedic Association.

  "I hope the information I am going to give you will help you to establish the diagnosis of infection when it is dubious, subtle or confused with other pathology. On the other hand it should help one to logically determine how long treatment for infection should continue. It is of crucial importance when one is contemplating the insertion of total joint arthroplasty. It can often settle the question whether an existing arthroplasty is simply loose or whether it is infected as well. As a research tool it helps one define the degree of infection and of course whether you have cured an infection eventually. Finally in medico legal disputes this information can be invaluable".

  "For at least two years I have been hearing growing rumours of new technology using joint fluid to diagnose infection with enhanced accuracy. It hasn't arrived in South Africa, but I thought it would be useful to evaluate the parameters we currently use so that we can have a base line for comparison. My study reflects the findings on 360 patients with a wide variety of pathology."
